In some cases you might want to generate barcodes to use with AccuTrack. For example:
1) You want to use a barcode reader to sign students in and out. The students do not have a barcode on their ID Card, so you want to print one on a sticker and put in on their ID card.
2) You use the media checkout module and you want to streamline the check in and checkout out of media items. To do this, you want to print out barcodes with media IDs and stick them on your media items, and then use a barcode scanner to check media in and out.
While you can find third party barcode generation software, you can print your own barcodes by simply using MS WordPad. Here is a tip on how to do this from Darby Smith at Portland State University:
1. Download the "Free 3of9" barcode font via this link: http://www.squaregear.net/fonts/
2. Use the new version (Free 3of9 extended) as the older version (Free 3of9) does not always work.
3. Open up the Avery sticker template in WordPad instead of Word - MS Word includes hidden symbols (like the symbol for paragraph) that might show up in the barcode.
4. Each barcode must begin and end with an asterisk, and they must be only numbers. For example, *1234*
5. Success!
Thanks Darby for sending in this tip!
